Indigo printing (“firbarstvo” or “ferbarstvo”) in Slovenia has its roots in the Middle European dyeing industry. Patterned cloth printing with hand-held models was first mentioned in the 17th century when, due to European clothing trends, there was growing interest in colourful printed fabrics. The craft was developed in small village workshops and later factories, although it saw its decline at the beginning of the 20th century. When employing this dyeing method the apprentices and their masters printed cotton cloth and home linen with wooden models and then proceeded to soak the fabric in indigo dye, creating white patterns of plants, flowers and geometrical shapes on a dark-blue background. The fabric within the price range of farmers was used to make clothes and national costumes.
